Hare Balloons

Hare Balloons, based out of Los Angeles, California, was thought to be the first of its kind, do-it-yourself hot air balloon kit to be marketed and sold. Here you will see a mid-1970's Hare Balloons brochure. The brochure speaks to the "age old adventure of ballooning becoming the sport of the 70's".

The Hare Balloon brochure touts a hot air balloon kit which "includes everything needed to construct a safe flyable hot air balloon". All materials; complete easy-to-follow instructions, information on experimental air worthiness certification, aircraft registration and pilot's licensing. "Anyone able to read, follow instructions and use the tools below can easily build from our kit".

The Hare burner system is much like that of the Piccard built system, in that it employed a "floating burner". The envelope was a standard 1.9 oz. rip-stop nylon (much like any other balloon system of the day). The Hare Balloon system design incorporates a Velcro rip-top for rapid deflation and side vent, again similar to that of the Piccard built system. Finally, the gondola was constructed of fiberglass with aluminum railing, similar to that of the RAVEN gondolas of the early-1970's. Unfortunately, at the time this page was written, we were able to  find only one  example photo of a of a

Hare Balloon System (the photo has not been verified to be a Hare Balloon system).  Other than that, the brochure pictures the only other Hare Balloon this writer is aware of.
